What a Nutritionist Eats When She's Really Stressed
No, it's NOT a salad...
Real Talk: No matter how healthy you are or look on social media, everyone has that emergency Nutella jar or nacho chips stored for when life gets stressful.
Stress eating happens to everybody—even nutritionists. Increasingly, research is showing that any type of stress can affect your body weight. Because the last thing you need when life gets chaotic is to be bloated or gain weight, here are slightly healthier stress-eating go-tos.
1- Nuts
When you crave something crunchy, indulge in lightly-salted walnuts, almonds or pistachios. Nuts are considered healthy fats rich in magnesium, which may help with irritability. However, pay close attention to the quantity because it's far too easy to mindlessly eat. I personally like pistachios because they are in a shell, which forces me to slow down while snacking.
2- Frozen Grapes
Frozen grapes take a while to eat and are a sweet, antioxidant-rich distraction.
3- Oatmeal
When you feel stressed, try to reach for foods that will help fight stress. Oatmeal is super comforting and an excellent source of complex carbs which also increases the production of serotonin, a mood-boosting brain chemical.
4- Yogurt and Berries
Always keep in mind for foods that maintain your energy and provide nutrients. Option for plain Greek yogurt for those probiotic bacteria, as gut health impacts emotional and mental health. You can add chia seeds or ground flaxseeds for extra fiber and plant-based omega-3 fatty acids. Adding fresh or frozen blueberries, blackberries, or raspberries on top adds some inflammation-fighting antioxidants.
5- Dark Chocolate Covered Nuts
Let’s be honest—You could snack on vegetables all day, but it just won't satisfy your desire for salty and sweet. That's why one of my favorite foods to eat when I'm stressed out are chocolate covered almonds. Bonus: They’re a filling combo thanks to their fiber, protein and fat content, and are a great source of magnesium, which naturally calms you down and helps fight anxiety.
6- Hummus and Carrots
Biting down on something crunchy helps when you're stressed out, so I love to chew on raw baby carrots paired with 2 tablespoons hummus and/or avocado. They’re rich in good-mood nutrients including folate, magnesium, and zinc, plus the fiber and protein keep you full.
7- Green Tea
Calm frazzled nerves with a soothing cup of your favorite tea blend.
