A Dozen Reasons to Love Eggs
One of the many things I love about being a dietitian is our ever-changing perception of the relationship between food, nutrition and overall health. As research progresses, recommendations and guidelines shift and vary. Eggs are a great example for instance, they were previously avoided due to concerns about cholesterol and heart health. Nevertheless, science now approves the opposite is true. So here's a dozen reasons why you should be consuming eggs:
1. An Egg-cellent Multivitamin Source
One serve (2 eggs) provides more than 10% of the recommended daily intake (RDI) for more than 11 vitamins and minerals including folate, vitamin B12, vitamin A, riboflavin, vitamin E, phosphorous, iron and thiamin.
2. The Cholesterol Misconception
Cholesterol found in food has much lower effects on our blood cholesterol levels than the impact of saturated and trans fats we consume. Even though eggs contain cholesterol, their content of saturated fat is low. (1.5g/egg)
3. An Inexpensive Source of Proteins
One serve provides at least 20% of the daily protein requirements for both men and women. They contain all essential amino acids needed.
4. Heart Friendly
According to the National Heart Foundation, healthy individuals can enjoy up to 6 eggs per week as part of a healthy and balanced diet. Restriction is however recommended for those at high risk or diagnosed with cardiovascular diseases.
5- The Good Fats
Eggs provide a good source of omega-3 fats which help protect against autoimmune disorders, heart disease and common eye disorders.
6- Macular Protection
Eggs contain 2 well absorbed antioxidants: Lutein and Zeaxanthin; both play a vital role in maintaining the health of the macular region of the retina in our eyes.
7- Antioxidant Boost
Eggs also are a great source of an antioxidant selenium which protects cells from damage and is thought to play a vital role in cancer and heart disease prevention.
8- Long Lasting
Fresh eggs can be kept in the fridge and may last up to 4 weeks making them a great on-hand option.
9- Thyroid Health
One serve of eggs provides 29% of the Iodine RDI needed for thyroid functioning.
10- Pregnancy Nutrition
Eggs provide many nutrients during pregnancy including choline for the healthy development of brain tissue in babies.
11- Versatile
Eggs are incredibly versatile as they can be cooked to a variety of textures. (Scrambled, poached, baked..)
12- A Five Minute Meal
Finally, eggs are considered an easy and fast meal that can last hours in our tummies!
